Niemi’s family roots come from the Tornio River Valley, and her summer house was in Paltamo in Kainuu. Maija-Liisa Niemi visited exhibitions at the Oulu Art Museum frequently and the museum played a role in her life.

Maija-Liisa Niemi Collection
The collection of Maija-Liisa Niemi, a dentist from Helsinki, was received as a bequest in 2017. The art museum had the opportunity to choose the works that were added to the museum's collections, some of which were related to the existing collections and others to Maija-Liisa Niemi's life.
